Transition

What is Transition?

Transition is a process that occurs during the 4 to 6 years before your child leaves school. It is a requirement under Federal and State Special Education Laws beginning at age 14.

This unique, hands-on learning program is designed to provide area high school students "real life" experience in independent living in a supported, safe environment with friends and peers.

What Occurs During This Process?

A plan must be developed by the educational system. This plan includes what steps will be taken to make your child's move from school to adult life as seamless as possible.

Does My Child Have A Future?

Every child has hopes, dreams and strengths on which to build. PIP helps the transition team identify what will be best for your child upon leaving school. Employment, independent living and further training & schooling are options for all children.

How Can Partners In Progress Help?

Remember that transition is a team effort. Once we get to know you and your child we work as a member of the team to keep things on track. Since we specialize in working with students with special needs we know the concerns and challenges you face. Aside from working directly with your child we act as a resource for your many questions.

When Do We Start?

The sooner the better! PIP can best help your child when we get acquainted early. Most schools begin formal transitioning at age 14. This is an ideal time for you to invite a representative from PIP to your child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and Transitional meetings.

First Steps

Vocational Evaluation

Early in the Transition Process PIP uses a variety of assessments to determine your childs interests and abilities. We provide lessons that teach about work and appropriateness on the jobsite.

Transitional Survey For Parents

PIP needs you on the team too! We need to know what you are thinking so that we can customize your child's plan. The survey allows everyone to know your wishes so we can pull together as a team.

Next Steps

Transition House

Right now it may be hard to think of your child as an independent adult. If independent living is listed as a transition goal, PIP's Transition House might be just the place to learn those important independent living skills. The Transition House leads your child down the path to independence gradually, in a supportive atmosphere among friends.

Community Based Vocational Training

PIP specializes in preparing students for the world of work. Every attempt is made to have your child placed in an appropriate job upon graduation. Our secret is in getting to know you and your child early. The experiences and training we provide move from general to specific. This concept has proven to be very successful.

Suggested Sequence

In order to provide a seamless transition for students the suggested sequence of programs is as follows:

Grade 10- If appropriate an introduction to the meaning of work through paid, hands on work experience at PIP's Vocational Training Facility
Grade 11- Students participate in Vocational Exploration and sample several appropriate jobs in the community (CBVT).
Grade 12- Job specific training, paid (CWE) or unpaid (CBVT), in a realistic career ideally leading to employment.
